Digital Radio Update

Despite disappointment and setback we still have hope!

In April, we reported that TWR was involved in discussions with a national network applying to operate the second national DAB digital radio multiplex, due to launch in 2008.

We were very disappointed that TWR was not included in the group of broadcasters who submitted the bid. We now know that our regulator, Ofcom, has awarded Channel 4 Radio the right to operate this multiplex, with a ten channel line up - but no Christian broadcaster!

TWR will continue to explore the possibilities for a national digital radio broadcasting platform and pray for the Lord's guidance. Digital radio continues to grow - according to Rajar, the radio industry trade body, about 5 million digital radio sets have been sold enabling around 20 per cent of the UK 's population to listen to the new radio format. Plans are advancing to integrate DAB receivers into mobile phones and car radios. And the launch of the second national multiplex is likely to drive sales of radio sets - some commentators think that it will do for digital radio what Freeview has done for Digital Television!

• Pray for us as we respond to the significant challenges digital radio raises for TWR - particularly the challenges of attracting audiences and raising the money that will be needed each year to sustain a national digital radio service (probably in the region of £750,000).
