Thousands of young girls in Kenya are brought up in violent and abusive conditions which continue on into their later married lives. Deeply engrained beliefs, an abuse of gender roles and the socio-economic and cultural conditions have fostered a dangerous attitude towards girls and young women:
- More than 20,000 children are trafficked annually in Kenya.
- Female circumcision, although outlawed in 2001, still persists, with an estimated 38% of woman being affected.
- Up to 12,660 girls were sexually abused by teachers over a five-year period.
Such is the prevalence of the abuse that many young women do not know or understand that what they are experiencing is illegal and immoral, and carry on living with the abuse rather than seeking help.
Trans World Radio in Kenya
TWR is in a position to be able to reach out to these young women and share the message of God’s unending and faithful love for them.
By educating these women and girls about their fundamental rights, and sharing knowledge and understanding, we hope to empower these generations to seek a better future.
A Message of Hope
The programme “Girls in Danger” sensitively informs young girls about the nature of abuse and seeks to support those who may be living under such conditions. There are also plans for a helpline to be established through which the girls in these areas can express their concerns and report perpetrators.
There has never been a better time to begin this broadcast - TWR Kenya recently launched its own FM network in Kenya which reaches over 60% of Kenya's rural population. A full production house with 5 studios, over 15 production staff, and a team of volunteers are in place to produce “Girls in Danger”.
But there isn't currently the financial support to get this programme off the ground. Without the necessary support, the message simply cannot be aired. Without hearing that message of hope, thousands of girls are still living under the constant threat of abuse.
You Can Help
Click below to support this project, and help bring “Girls in Danger” onto the air so that thousands of girls can hear the message of hope through Christ.
The message is ready. The facilities are in place. Please do not delay - join us in reaching out to those in danger.
Thank you.
