In a tiny, isolated house, a 60 year old woman lives alone. Her children have long since moved away to the city, but she is determined to stay.
“When I came to Christ, TWR programmes were my teachers. I decided to stay here because God still needs me sharing the Gospel and serving him here. I love the people, and I have a house church in my home.”
Thousands of ordinary Cubans are dedicated to serving the Lord by sharing him with their neighbours. People who came to faith despite being raised in atheism are forming house churches and seeking out pastors, but it is not an easy process. They heard the Gospel and grew in their faith listening to TWR, and form churches. TWR is even listed as a founding mentor for some congregations! But as they seek out leaders, they are finding that they are better equipped in handling the Word than the pastors they call.
This situation is rich in possibility and rife with challenge.
Our Cuban producer, Pastor Alberto Gonzalez, travels around Cuba meeting people and training pastors. If you could see Cuba through his eyes you would know how eager the people are to know and serve God, and how great the need for pastor training really is. Through his work we know that Cuba desperately needs programmes which provide theological training to answer the many questions of pastors who have no seminary training. There is only so much that Alberto can do on his own.
It was at one of Alberto’s training events that he met the woman from the tiny house – attending the event as a volunteer cook. Cuban listeners like this woman respond enthusiastically to programmes like Messages of Faith and Hope, where they hear a Cuban voice addressing uniquely Cuban issues of faith, but imagine what impact they could have if more people were called to Christ, supported and trained! Cuba, a unique political and spiritual context, needs programmes made in Cuba, by Cubans, for Cubans.
Isaiah 58:10 reminds us, “If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday” (ESV). Now is the time to pour ourselves out for the spiritually hungry and afflicted in Cuba, to be a part of God’s transforming work on the island.
To be part of this transformational movement: planting churches, training pastors and resourcing believers, make a donation today to TWR-UK. You can give online safely and securely either using the “Give” button on our website or by clicking on this link. Alternatively you can call our Manchester office during normal office hours. Simply mention that your donation is for Cuba.
Together we can ensure that a generation raised in atheism can raise their own children in a strong, authentic faith.
